Paper or E?

Since the beginning of the year, I've been reading more than I did last year. Part of it is because I have finally adapted back into working full time and have figured out how to spread everything around, the other reason is my tablet PC. I can have multiple books on there I can read whenever I want.  And with the exception of a book coming out in May that I plan on buying in paperback (I already have the rest of the set that way), I see more e-books in my future.

I don't miss the paper feel or smell. I do find flipping back to that earlier section to compare something a little more challenging than with a paperback, but I don't flip back that often, so it really isn't a problem.

What about you? Are you reading more e-books than paper? Why do you prefer one over the other?

  1. I've tried, Mary. But I can't get into the e-books. And the really sad part is that I keep downloading them (mainly because some of them are cheap), hoping that I'll actually read one. ...hasn't happened. :(

  2. I still prefer the real deal, but many of the books I get these days are on my iPod. If a book is part of a series, I continue to buy it on the format I bought the first one in. All adult romances are purchased as ebooks. The tough part is that I read YA and have three kids (one who is almost a teen). Ebooks make it harder for my kids to borrow my books. If I had bought The Hunger Games trilogy as an ebook, my son wouldn't have been able to read it. I would have had to buy it for him.

  3. My son bought himself a Kindle Fire. So I bought his old Kindle from him to help him get the money quicker. Since the beginning of the year, my reading is way up compared to previous years. The entire reason is that Kindle.

That said, it is strictly for enjoyment reading. If I want a book that I'll reference multiple times, I get it on paper. So any reference book or any book about a subject on the homestead is bought in paper format.

Stina, if you have more than 1 e-reader in the family, you can link them all to one Amazon account and those e-readers have access to all the books on that account. Granted, once the kids get older and go out on their own they probably won't want to be on your Amazon account, but most likely this way of sharing e-books with others won't be needed by then. Also, some books are able to be loaned to other people. Might want to look into that as well.

  4. I find myself reading so much more now that I have a Kindle. I just upgraded to the Fire and love it. I like the fact that I have all my books, reference and entertainment, available all the time. I throw the Kindle in my purse whenever I leave home. If I'm stuck in traffic...I read...at the doctor...I read...in line at the grocery store (yes, truly)...I read.

I love ebooks and it's not just because my debut novel, Concilium, will release in ebook form in July (Shameless plug - sorry.) :)

  5. I personally can't stand e-books. For me, it's just not the same. I miss the feel of a book in my hands, the beauty of the text and formatting, and running my fingers over a high-quality cover. There's no way a computer will ever replace books in my mind.

  6. I read ebooks most of the time. Then again, I'm a tech dork. I had the first generation Kindle and every generation since because they suit my personality. Not to mention the fact that I struggle with patience, so pushing a button and having the book in front of me in less than a minute is a good thing LOL. The one thing I enjoy though, is actually roaming the bookstore. So, I still buy paperbacks periodically. I love to peruse the shelves and pick up the books.

  7. Hi, Mary, I came here via Carol Riggs' blog. I haven't read too many e books yet, although I'm starting to. At heart, I'm a print freak. I really love the feel of a book in my hands. And I love browsing book stores and libraries. There's a certain atmosphere.

  9. Mostly ebooks for me. I do miss paper a bit, but convenience and space is winning out.

  10. For the first time ever I'm reading more e than paper. Two on my Kindle and one library book. I still prefer paper.

  13. Paper, paper, paper, paper, PAPER. You nailed it something about the smell of the ink and the feel of the pages in my hands that gets me every time.
