Jimena Novaro Talks Anti-Heroes

Today Jimena Novaro, author of BLUE RABBIT, is guesting on the blog. In celebration of the upcoming release, if you add BLUE RABBIT to your shelf on Goodreads, you will be entered to win a copy on release day!

Blue Rabbit

Now, please welcome Jimena!

Bad Girls, Bad Boys
Thank you so much for hosting me, Mary! Hello, readers of Mary’s blog! Thanks for stopping by!

I have a thing for antiheroes.

Take this, for instance: not too long ago I read Mary’s wonderful first book, Quest of the Hart. Out of the whole cast of great characters, it was Arabella, the main antagonist, whom I loved the most. I identified with her, sympathized with her, and felt like she’d gotten an awful deal in life―always overshadowed by her brother, the heir to the throne as the younger twin only because he was a boy. I didn’t condone her actions, but I understood them.

Other examples of characters who won my heart through anti-heroism include Starbuck and Laura Roslin from the reimagined Battlestar Galactica; Ripred from The Underland Chronicles by Suzanne Collins; the entire cast of Firefly; Mogget from the Abhorsen series and Ella from Shade’s Children, both by Garth Nix; Rosto from the Beka Cooper series by Tamora Pierce; Spike from Cowboy Bebop... the list goes on and on.

Why do I love them so much? In general, I feel drawn to moral ambiguity―to stories where right and wrong aren’t clear-cut―because it’s truer to life and leaves room for the audience’s interpretations. See, in my opinion, a good story is like good music―you want a variety of notes, not just an endless progression of lows or highs. I like for a story to punch me in as many of the feels as possible, and watching characters struggle against darkness and sometimes overcome it, sometimes let it swallow them, certainly hits notes on all points in the scale.

Also, antiheroes also have more elements working against them than traditional heroes. In addition to the exterior obstacles, they also have to battle their inner demons―their past, their guilt, their jealousies, their vanities and their obsessions.

Plus... aren’t they fun? They can get up to all sorts of shenanigans that traditional heroes might not involve themselves in. They’re usually pretty badass, too. They say things that others wouldn’t dare to. Sometimes they even speak the truths that others don’t want to hear.

These kinds of characters take you for quite a ride. You have fun, you cry, you cheer them on, you get angry at them, you wish you could reach into the story world and give them a hug... or maybe a good shake.

Do you like antiheroes? Who are your favorites?

In Knoxville, Tennessee, there’s a bridge to another world.
When they first cross it, Erika and her friends feel like they’ve stumbled into a dream. Magical and mysterious, the other world becomes their little paradise, a place to explore and escape from their everyday lives. Until one night a boy from school, Mike, follows them to the other side―and he’s kidnapped by strange and powerful Creatures.
Back home, everyone thinks Erika and the gang are responsible for Mike’s disappearance. The dream has become a nightmare. How can they negotiate with these Creatures to rescue Mike and clear their names? And why are the Creatures fixated on Erika, who feels drawn to their world even as she senses the danger?

Jimena Novaro always knew she would be a writer. It just took her a few years to realize that she wanted to do it full-time, and relegate things like going into outer space and being an opera prima donna to hobbies.

She loves reading and writing science fiction, fantasy, and YA. A self-proclaimed geeky sort of nerd, she spends a lot of her time fangirling over her favorite shows, books, and bands and educating herself about super-important topics such as how to survive an arrow wound and whether or not you can shoot a gun in space. Sometimes she gets super serious and rants about some socio-political issue or other.

She’s a member of the awesome fantasy authors group Mystic Quills. You can find her free epic fantasy serial, The Withering Sword, on her website (a new chapter comes out every Sunday!) Her first book, Blue Rabbit, a YA urban fantasy, comes out this December!

Introducing Cait from Fire of Stars and Dragons

Today I am excited to share with you my interview with Cait, from Melissa Petreshock's Fire of Stars and Dragons.

King Corrin insisted I return to Boston to meet with Cait. Even though I considered saying no, it was only for a moment, as I got to fly in the private jet again. Seriously, who would say no to that?

I met with her at the Copley Marriott, in the same room I met King Corrin.Even though I'd dressed up a bit, I still felt a bit frumpy compared to Cait in her simple blue dress and heels. I tried to figure out the designer, but fashion's not really my thing. Now jewelry is a different story, and the silver Celtic woven knot ring that flashed on her right hand was clearly an heirloom piece.

MW: Cait, thank you so much visiting with me. I've had the pleasure of speaking with two of your three suitors, and I must say, you have one tough choice ahead of you.

I caught a hint of an eye roll, followed by a sigh and a tight smile.

Cait: You’re welcome, Mary… And yes, tough would certainly be one word to describe the situation.

Her words were coated with the accent expected of a native of Boston.

MW: I tried to imagine what I would do in your situation, and knew it would involve a list of some sort as I am an avid list maker! So, if you were making a list, what would you say is one thing about each of your suitors that endears them to you?

Cait: One thing… about each of them. She stared at me then blinked. Um… Let me just name their best physical feature, in my personal opinion. Theo has the sexiest hair ever-jet black, just a little bit of wave to it, brushes over his shoulders perfectly when he moves. Amazing. Dante’s eyes are incredible. I had to get used to the way they change, their intensity and brightness with his moods and all. He’s the first demigod I’ve ever known… But those vivid blue eyes of his are absolutely unreal. Corrin… She laughed gently. Corrin has these dimples and faint freckles across his cheeks that are heart stoppingly adorable. They lessen the harshness of facing the fact he’s- She made air quotes here-“King Corrin”. So… Yeah. There you go.

MW: Mmm. I'm totally an eye girl, so that would be a bonus to Dante. Now, I'm sure each of these suitors has something you don't like about them. So, what is something you wish you could change?

A very unlady like snort escapes as Cait laughs.

Cait: Corrin could get over himself. That would be a start… Dante could stand to lighten up. I don’t think he speaks sarcasm very fluently, maybe not at all… And Theo needs to stop being so hard on himself. These dragons are heavy on the whole honor and duty thing. It’s a bit much.

MW: After meeting King Corrin, I'd have to say I agree with that sentiment. I didn't use any sarcasm when I spoke with Dante, but I can see where he might take things a little too literally. As for Theo, I haven't had the pleasure of speaking with him yet, so I thank you for that bit of insight to him. In general, we tend to size people up by what we see or hear about them. What's something that surprised you about your suitors. or something they did that was completely unexpected to you?

Cait: Wow… So much of this has been unexpected already. She grinned and giggled, reminding me a bit of a school girl. Theo has a sense of humor. I always thought of dragons as being all serious, but he’s quick with the sarcasm, which I love. I don’t know if all of them are like that, but at least Theo is. Dante isn’t all high and mighty god-like or anything. He’s sweet. And Corrin, well, when I first went inside his penthouse apartment, I saw things that gave me an insight into the personal side of him that was a lot different than I expected. Corrin and King Corrin aren’t exactly the same. There’s two sides to him.

MW: Hmm. That's interesting. I can't wait to read about this other side to King Corrin. You seem to have a lot going into the plus side for each of them. So, what's the one thing one of your suitors could do to tip the balance, so to speak, and ensure you chose them as husband?

Cait: Considering I’m limited on options, I don’t know that sweeping me off my feet with the greatest love imaginable is realistic. She rolled her eyes. But they damn well better respect the fact I’m a person, not an object or piece of property just because I’m female. Treat me as an equal. That’s a winner of an idea.
MW: That's a unique thing to be looking for. I wonder which one of them will figure it out! I glanced at my watch and groaned. Time was almost up. Do you have time for a few quick fire questions, just to give us a better sense of your personal tastes?

Cait: Sure. Why not… The longer I’m with you, the longer I can avoid the tension with any of them.

MW: Wonderful. Just go with your gut for these. Coffee or tea?

Cait: Coffee. Lots of it.

MW: Wine or beer?

Cait: Refined women always drink wine… Beer.

MW: I laughed. Chocolate or bacon?

Cait: She tossed her arms up in the air and excitement glitters in her eyes as she shouted Bacon!

MW: Work or pleasure?

Cait: My Uncle Thomas worked his ass off to ensure I’d never have to do without, never need to work if I didn’t want to, but also taught me the importance of helping those less fortunate than us. I hope I always do things I enjoy that work to help others… So, work for pleasure.

MW: Great answer. Dining in or eating out?

Cait: She laughed obnoxiously loud. If you have to ask me this, you never read the tabloid article about me setting our penthouse on fire trying to cook pasta when I was seventeen… Eating out, definitely. I’m dangerous in a kitchen.

MW: Nope, I never heard about that, but I would choose eating out after something like that too. We laughed together. Thank you so much, Cait, and I wish you the best of luck with your choice!

Cait: You’re welcome, Mary… And thanks, I might need that extra luck.

Exciting News!!!!

I am so excited to announce that my YA Paranormal Romance, FAERY MARKED, has been picked up by BookFishBooks for release in 2014. It's the first book in a (planned) 3 book series dealing with Faeries, Humans, and magic.

In other news:

Different Kind of Knight is off to the publisher for it's final set up. I am eagerly awaiting my galley proof and cover. (Can't wait to share that with you once I have it!) and of course, I'll keep you posted on the release date. (Still slated for Winter 2013/2014.)

I've been working on a couple of novellas I plan on releasing in 2014 on my own.

  • The Mystery Prince is a twist on a Cinderella-type tale, where the Princess is the one searching for the Prince who left her at the ball.
  • The Love Talker's Daughter is set around the magic of MidSummer's Night, and of course it has Faeries in it.

I'm also playing with a couple new stories (a Valentine's Day themed tale and a Romantic Comedy) as well as drafting out book 4 in the Princess of Valendria series and book 2 in the Faery series.

So, what are you working on? What are you reading? What release are you looking forward to in 2014?

How Authors Write- Zara Hoffman

Today, I am so excited, because I have a new author to introduce to you. She's not only a newly published author, but she's a teenager. Welcome Zara!

Tell us, what do you write?
I write YA (Young Adult) bordering on NA (New Adult) fantasy romance. I have a NA fairytale retelling series coming up, too after THE BELGRAVE LEGACY is completed.

Do you use 1st person, 3rd person, multiple POVs?
It varies depending on the book. For THE BELGRAVE LEGACY, I'm using 3rd omniscient, but with each of the 4 fairytales I'm doing something different (but how I plan to do that is a surprise I'm not ready to reveal just yet)

How do you get started with a book- is it an idea, a character, vary from story to story?
I start with an idea that normally comes to me in a dream, as hokey as that sounds. [Not hokey at all. I've had that happen, too!] Then I start writing a scene before I do anything else, just to get a sense of the story.

Do you draft quickly?
I completed THE BELGRAVE DAUGHTER in 7 months (4 for the first draft, the rest for editing). [Nice! That's pretty quick. Mine first took 8 years!]

Do you do research before your first draft, during?
I research as needed along the way. Normally, my stories don't require much research to begin with...

Do you outline? How?
I generally do a barebones outline to begin with after the initial free write (see my answer to #3), but sometimes I make it more detailed. It always evolves either way as I continue writing.

Do you name everything up front when you are drafting or do you leave comments for yourself to go back and fill in later so you don't lose the flow of what you are working on?
I try and write linearly and as completely as possible. I always know edits will happen, but I still try and get a semi-polished piece in the first draft.

Do you work with CP's (Critique Partners) or Beta's Beta readers)? How soon into your draft do you let them see your work?
I technically HAVE a beta group, but haven't sent them any of my writing because I kept changing stuff every two days. For my next book, I'm going to actually use them. [I had to learn to wait to get feedback back from my CP's before working on revisions (which really is harder than it sounds!) as I would make sweeping changes before they had a chance to read any of what I'd sent.]

What books/websites have you found most helpful to helping you write your best?
Writer's Digest (books, magazine, and blog), as well as Veronica Roth's blog, and the Go Teen Writers blog.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started writing?
A first draft is NOT the final one, so don't rush the writing, revising, or editing processes. It will only create more work down the road. [That's a great piece of advice!]

What do you have out now, or coming out? Any upcoming events? A website we can find you and your books at? An author photo? A booktrailer? Anything else you want to share?
My debut novel, THE BELGRAVE DAUGHTER (1st in THE BELGRAVE LEGACY trilogy) came out November 14, 2013. [Congratulations, Zara! I am so thrilled for you!]

The Septemgeminus Prophecy states: "A powerful sorceress with blood laced in gold sevenfold shall determine the fate of the world."

Fawn Belgrave's magical powers are the coveted prize in a bet between God and the Devil.

When she meets Caleb, the dark angel assigned to seduce her, Fawn's life is turned upside down.

Introducing Dante from FIRE OF STARS AND DRAGONS

Today I am super excited to share my interview with Dante, from Fire of Stars and Dragons. King Corrin awed me, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect from a demigod.

Let me tell you. Dante was nothing I expected a demigod to be. I expected flashy and egotistic, but what I found was laid back and modest.

His soft, black cashmere sweater with navy trousers and perfectly shined Oxfords were much more casual than King Corrin's sport coat. Even so, I was happy I'd put on a skirt and done my hair and makeup before Dante popped in. And I do mean popped in. One minute I was sitting at my kitchen table going over my notes, the next there was a flash of brilliant blue lightening and Dante was seated in a chair beside me.

MW: Goodness! I pressed a hand to my chest and let out a shuddering breath. You startled me.

Dante: Forgive me, Ms. Waibel. You did say ten o'clock.

His lips curved in a smile as I looked at the clock. It was ten.

MW: I did. I shook my head. I just assumed you would knock on my door. I smiled. Thank you for coming, even if it wasn't quite conventional.

Dante: My pleasure. Please, feel free to ask me anything you'd like to know.

MW: Thank you…hmm, My Lord? Your Grace? I must confess, I'm not quite certain what title to call you by.

Dante seemed to grimace here, as if my mention of titles bothered him.

Dante: Please, Ms. Waibel, I prefer to forgo titles. My name is Dante, simply Dante.

MW: Very well, then, Dante. And please, call me Mary. He inclined his head. Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer a few questions for me.

A soft smile curved his lips, and his vivid blue eyes brightened and amusement seemed to dance in their depths.

Dante: Madame. I frowned, and he held up a hand. Mary, you flatter to think me of such importance that mere minutes in the span of millennia would be an imposition upon my time. I’m rather intrigued to learn what questions you have for me.

MW: Well, why don't we start with this one. I pick up the index card I had been reading when he appeared. As the son of a goddess, you are quite a powerful man, and clearly an intelligent one, given the time you've spent studying people and things. Out of all that you've experienced, what is the one experience that means the most to you personally?

Dante: By birth, my mother, the Goddess gifted me with certain powers; however, considering me powerful, in my personal opinion, is to qualify me as a whole. You must equate true power as the sum of a man, his innate gifts and the knowledge he chooses to attain, making full use of any natural intelligence. In truth, brute power is corrupt power.
He paused here, his cheeks flushing slightly as he sighed and shook his head.

My apologies, Ms. Waibel… You asked about my studies and experiences, not for a tangent on my opinions regarding the corruption of power.

He smiled another charming smile, and I bit back a sigh.

Have you ever read the book How the Irish Saved Civilization by Thomas Cahill?

Before I could answer, he continued on.

His portrayal is not precisely accurate, yet quite close to historical events. Saint Patrick, Saint Augustine, Saint Columba, they and many monks took great care in preserving human history, documents and magnificent works of literature, that may have otherwise been lost with the fall of the Roman Empire. Their actions stand out due to my connection with the ancestry of the Celtic civilization. What little I know of my father tells his origins are from a tribe of fae who lived in the Scottish highlands as far back as twelve thousand years ago. Gaelic history has always held a personal fascination for me.

He paused again, his eyes taking on that distant look of someone lost in the past. After a moment, he spoke again.

As I was saying, I had the opportunity to meet St Columba and spent some time at the abbey on Iona. Out of all I’ve experienced, I must say it is moments such as these I find most profound throughout history, when the human spirit prevails against all odds, meeting challenges and overcoming them to continue moving forward in their development and evolution. Deities, dragons, vampires, fae, elves… humans may very well be physically weaker than any other species, but I daresay their spirit cannot be crushed so easily. Utterly fascinating, humanity, beautiful in all its flaws… I do apologize. I’m sure you have other questions, yet you touch on such an interesting subject. I cannot help myself

He gave an apologetic smile and nodded at me to continue.

MW: Like King Corrin, you've never wished to marry, but have been content to be an observer of all around you. What about Cait made you change your mind?

Dante: You are greatly mistaken to believe I am like Corrin, a child with little concept for what gravity such a decision holds. By no means am I perfect, humans often misconstrue deities as perfect beings, but I do strive to live by a strict code, uphold myself to higher expectations, those of my mother.

He laughed harshly.

And there are no higher expectations than when your mother is the Mother Goddess. Among the deities, the eternal, marriage is truly until death, the death of time itself, until we all return to dust. I will not marry for anything less than love. To do so would be to commit a sin against the sanctity of such a union.

He glanced down at the triquerta ring on his right hand.

I believe I can love Caitriona… His voice trailed off and I could barely hear him say, I want to love her.

MW: What special quality do you think you possess that will make Cait choose you as her husband? And what special strategies do you intend to use to be sure of the outcome?

His face took on a serious look, but as he spoke about Cait, his eyes softened.

Dante: Caitriona is an unusual woman, not one who finds my birthrights or gifts as particularly special; therefore, I rely on those qualities that should truly matter in any marriage; unwavering devotion, fidelity, honesty, and an undying eternal love. However, I have no special strategies. Love is not a game. I do not wish to toy with her heart and hope she has no intention to do so with mine. You cannot ensure an outcome when the outcome desired is to be loved.

MW: I am sure Cait will appreciate knowing you won't toy with her, and I look forward to seeing what happens between you and Cait. I looked down at my cards then at Dante. Do you have time for a few rapid fire questions?

His quiet laugh filled the room, and his smile was stunning.

Dante: Mary, I would not have agreed to this interview had I not been willing to see it through, answering all questions you had prepared. Fire away, my lady.

MW: Great! OK. Coffee or tea?

Dante: Tea. Earl grey.

MW: Wine or beer?

Dante: Wine. Merlot preferably.

MW: Chocolate or bacon?

He wrinkled his nose as I asked this question, and I found it rather cute.

Dante: Chocolate, most definitely. High quality dark chocolate.

MW: Work or pleasure?

Dante: I’m unsure there is a definitive line between the two. If you love your work, it is a pleasure. Inversely, some people turn their pleasures, their hobbies, into work. Every pursuit has its value, leaving me unable to answer that one, Mary. I’m quite sorry if that disturbs your interview process.

MW: Not at all. Just one more. Dining in or eating out?

Dante: I actually quite enjoy cooking and have learned many interesting recipes from Evan’s wife Runa, but I must admit I prefer eating out. People-watching is my hobby I suppose.

MW: Thank you so much, Dante. It's been a pleasure learning more about you.

Dante: Oh, no. Thank you. I appreciate you so politely enduring my rambling on a bit there. You had some excellent questions.

MW: Thank you, and I didn't think you rambled at all.

Dante: You are most welcome, and now, I shall bid you farewell, Madame.

He rose, and in a flash of blue lightning, disappeared from my kitchen.

MOONLESS by Crystal Collier

Today I am super excited to be a part of the blog tour for Crystal Collier's MOONLESS. One of her characters, Kiren, has agreed to an interview, although I must say, he was quite difficult to get answers from. See what you think!

Ginger hair frames Kiren’s clean-shaven face, straight nose and piercing blue eyes as he takes a seat. A jagged white scar cuts from below one eye down his cheek.

Welcome, Kiren. It’s so nice to have you here today.
*leaning forward on his knees* I have reluctantly agreed to be here at my author’s behest. There may be some questions I cannot or will not answer.

Fair enough. Should we begin?
Indeed. *sits back*

What is your full name?
Kiren De Kir, although I answer to many different names.

Like what? And why?
*drumming fingers and staring*

Forbidden territory, huh? Where do you live?
*shifty eyes* Primarily on the road.

How long have you been living without a proper home?
I never said I lack a proper home, only that I rarely occupy one.

Why?
*jaw clenches as he leans forward* Do you know what happens on moonless nights?

No. What happens on moonless nights?
*shakes his head* If you’re ignorant, you are safer.

That sounds slightly freaky.
*nods*

You look about twenty, how old are you?
Next question.

What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
Other than sitting through interviews?

That scar on your cheek, where did it come from?
The person who taught me what really matters in life.

And who was that?
*crosses his arms and stares*

What’s the best/worst gift you’ve ever received?
*slides a hand over his chest, revealing the outline of a chain through the material* The best and worst gift is
the weight my father placed around my neck.

Can you tell us any more about that?
*shakes his head*

What do you miss most about being a kid?
My family.

What happened to them?
*eyes close*

Are they gone?
*looks away*

How old were you when you lost them?
Six.

Do you think you’ve turned out the way your parents expected?
No. But I dare believe they would be pleased with what I’ve become.

See what I mean? Not very forthcoming. I guess we'll just have to snag a copy of MOONLESS and read more about Kiren and how he fits in the story. Be sure to scroll all the way down for the Rafflecopter- a chance to win MOONLESS and several other prizes!

Among the many things to change for her that evening are: her physical appearance—from ghastly to breathtaking, an epidemic of night terrors predicting the future, and the blue-eyed man’s unexpected infusion into her life. Not only do his appearances precede tragedies, but they’re echoed by the arrival of ravenous, black-robed wraiths on moonless nights.

Unable to decide whether he is one of these monsters or protecting her from them, she uncovers what her father has been concealing: truths about her own identity, about the blue-eyed man, and about love. Eric Price and Owen from UNVEILING THE WIZARDS SHROUD

Today I am excited to turn the blog over to fellow MuseItUp author Eric Price, and Owen, a character from Eric's upcoming debut novel, Unveiling the Wizards' Shroud.  Take it away, Eric!

Be sure you read all the way through to see how to win this awesome shirt!

When I sat down to write a blog post for Mary, I intended to put together a mock newspaper story like I did for Katie Carroll, which her readers seemed to like a lot. But as often happens when I write, and I think other authors have this issue as well, something completely different appeared on my screen.

A few months ago, my publisher, Muse It Up Publishing, suggested a blog theme of having your main character interview you. This seemed like an interesting idea, but I never found time to do it. Well, it finally happened. Owen convinced me to meet, and he got some things off his chest. The interview didn’t go as well as I had hoped. He seems to have a chip on his shoulder about some of the stuff he got into during Unveiling the Wizards’ Shroud, and he blames me. As if I had anything to do with it! I just opened a window into his world and wrote what I saw. But how do you convince someone who’s never seen a computer something like that? I did manage to find someone a lot like myself at the same age. In that regard, I guess we were destined to bump heads a bit. Is this what I have to look forward to when my boys are teenagers?

If you like what you see, you can buy the book and enter the contest. If you want the book, but don’t care about the T-shirt, hold on to your confirmation number anyway. I plan on holding more contests in the coming weeks. Just check authorericprice.com to stay up to date on what promotions I’m running. Some, I think, are very interesting. I’ll have a chance to see who really pays attention when they read my book.

Here’s the interview as I received it from Owen. I thought about editing it to make myself look better, but decided against it.

Eric enters the room and his eyes instantly dart to the sword I left on the desk. He takes his hands out of his pockets and reaches for the sword. He must change his mind because he withdraws his arm and sits in an empty chair. He faces me with his back to the sword.

Owen: Thanks for meeting with me today, Eric.

Eric: You’re welcome, Owen.

Owen: What is this room?

Eric: It’s my office.

Owen: What do you do in your office?

Eric: I write.

Owen: Ah, yes, you write. That’s the reason I wanted to talk to you in the first place. Before you came along, I spent my days studying, practicing swordplay, and exploring the forest. You ruined everything. You made me team up with Cedric, you put my father’s life in danger, you almost got Yara killed.

Eric: Yara did not almost die.

Owen: Hard telling what could have happened in that cave, and you put her there.

Eric: I did no such thing. She got herself into the situation. She wasn’t even supposed to come with you, remember? Besides, I just tell people what happens in your world. I don’t alter the course of events.

Owen: How am I supposed to believe you? Everything was fine before you came along.

Eric: I just came into your life and started writing about events the day everything changed for you. Don’t you think it would have been kind of boring if I’d have just written about you studying, practicing swordplay, and exploring?

Owen: Are you calling my life boring?

Eric: No. I’m just saying readers want to see how characters handle situations different than their normal daily routine.

I slam my charred-looking hand on the table.

Owen: This hand is certainly different than my normal routine. Are you going to do anything to fix it?

Eric: I can’t do anything about it; I’ve already told you that. But I have looked ahead in your world. I think another event is going to happen. You may even get a solution to your hand problem.

Owen: When are you going to write this story?

Eric: I don’t know. I’ve got at least two works in front of it. Maybe three. Yara has been asking for her own book too.

Owen: Don’t you do anything to hurt Yara.

Eric: I’ve already told you, I don’t decide what happens. Besides, you’ve known Yara as long as anyone. She can take care of herself.

Owen: What have you seen of her story?

Eric: Not much. It looks like she’ll be leaving Wittatun for a while. She has to travel across the sea. I think she’s going to meet some mermaids and mermen.

Owen: Mermen?

Eric: Yes, mermen. Are you alright with that, or do I sense a tinge of jealousy? You don’t have a crush on her, do you?

Owen: For Yara? No. She’s like my sister. But I worry about her, and I’ve seen what kind of stories you like to write. Also, I’ve never heard of mermen. The seamen only tell stories of the beautiful mermaids they come across on their voyages.

Eric: Well, everyone leaves out some details of their stories. And as far as mermaids being beautiful… well, I’ve heard beauty is in the eye of the beholder. They’re a bit scaly for my taste.

Owen: Alright. So after Yara’s voyage and safe return…

Eric: I didn’t say she’d have a safe return.

Owen: After Yara’s voyage AND SAFE RETURN, do you think you’ll be able to solve this hand issue?

Eric: I don’t know for sure. I just saw a glimpse of it, and it looked different. It seemed to work better for you.

Owen: I better let you get back to your writing, so you can finish these books. I’d hate to spend the rest of my life like this.

I stand to leave and grab the sword from his desk. I scrape the point on purpose, leaving a scratch down the top of his cherry wood desk.

Owen: That’s for the hand.

Wow! Thanks Eric and Owen. That was quite an interview. I'm very curious now to see what happened to Owen's hand. If you're as curious as I am, head on over and pre-order your copy today!

As the only son to King Kendrick, Owen despises the idea of being king one day. Magician may be the only career he’d like less. He has dreaded the days leading up to his fifteenth birthday, when his father will certainly declare Owen heir to the throne. But at the birthday celebration, his father falls ill. The only person in the kingdom that may be able to save him is a magician–the very same magician Owen holds responsible for the death of his mother.

Owen and his companions will have to travel the continent of Wittatun in search of the cure for King Kendrick. On the journey, they will battle strange beasts and harsh climates, befriend extraordinary magicians, and meet a dragon before returning to Innes Castle–where much has happened in the days since he departed.

Hmmm. Eric gave me a teaser from the story, and it makes me wonder if this is where Owen injured his hand. What do you think?

Owen halted in his tracks. Did the magician really just suggest they stroll into the perils and scorching heat of the accursed land? He shook his head in disgust.

“Did you say the Land of Fire?”

Cedric stopped and looked back at Owen, a casual expression gracing his face. “Yes.”

“So we have to cross Death Desert?”

“Indeed, we do.”

Owen could feel rage bubbling at his temples. His vision lost focus, and his voice sounded more like the grunt of a wild boar than a human. “You know I can’t get beyond the outer rim! If the heat doesn’t kill me, the animals will!”

“You can, and will, get through Death Desert,” Cedric’s mustache twitched as he attempted to smile through his mass of facial hair. “But we’ll have to use magic.”

Erin Albert's THE PROPHECY

Today I am THRILLED to be part of my close friend (and CP and partner in crime) Erin Albert's blog tour for her debut release, THE PROPHECY, the first book in The Fulfillment Series.

Be sure to check out the Rafflecopter at the end!

I had the privilege of reading THE PROPHECY (and part of the sequel) as Erin's CP, and let me tell you this- I can't wait to read more and see where she takes these characters!

Now, to whet your appetite, here's my review of Erin's debut novel:

Follow Layla as her world falls apart when she's proclaimed The Fulfilment. In love with one man, duty bound to another, or is she?

Not all is as it seems and darker powers are at play in this epic
fantasy. I really enjoyed this debut novel from Erin Albert. She weaves a fantastic tale and leaves you on the edge of your seat for the next in the series.

THE PROPHECY by ERIN ALBERT
Growing up on a small farm in the kingdom of Vanguard, seventeen-year-old Layla Givens lives a deceptively tranquil existence. But her carefully constructed life quickly falls apart when she’s abducted by a religious zealot who proclaims her The Fulfillment of an ancient peace prophecy and whisks her away to marry her greatest enemy.

Wilhelm, Prince of the Ethereals, is reluctant to meet his new bride. He's grown up believing Vanguards are evil, an enemy to fight and fear...not love. Can he set aside his prejudices and work alongside Layla to bring lasting peace after centuries of war?

Nash, a loner who has never fit in, carries a huge secret, one big enough to destroy both kingdoms. When he accidently meets Layla, he’s no longer content to live in the shadows, but he must resist his growing attraction—for her safety and for the longevity of the two kingdoms.

When Nash's secret is revealed, a firestorm sweeps through both realms, with Layla at the center. Now she must choose between duty and desire while the fate of two nations hangs in the balance.

How Authors Write- Heather Fraser Brainerd

Today I welcome (back, in a way) fellow Muse author Heather Fraser Brainerd. Heather has been here before with her brother, David, but today she's here to talk about her individual writing process and share her new release with us (and a giveway to a lucky commentor)!

Welcome, Heather. Would you please tell us what you write?
I’ve dabbled in several genres, from Paranormal to SciFi to Chick Lit, even delving into YA and MG. Everything I write seems to involve some element of mystery. I guess this makes sense, since I love to read mysteries.

Do you use 1st person, 3rd person, multiple POVs?
It really depends on the piece. I write it down the way I hear it in my head. That only sounds a little crazy, right? [I totally get that- it's a writer thing for sure. The same way our characters 'talk' to us.]

How do you get started with a book- is it an idea, a character, vary from story to story?
It totally varies from story to story, but usually seems to start with a seed of “what if…”

Do you do research before your first draft, during?
I absolutely love research, and work it in as needed — sometimes before I write one word, sometimes mid-manuscript.

Do you name everything up front when you are drafting or do you leave comments for yourself to go back and fill in later so you don't lose the flow of what you are working on?
I enjoy coming up with names, and usually just go with the first one that pops into my head. They always seem to be more natural than a name I’ve agonized over. [I love it when the character's name just pops up naturally like that.]

Do you work with CP's or Beta's?
On my solo works, my brother Dave is my beta reader. He’s brutally honest, which I greatly appreciate. He’s my co-author on other books, so we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses very well.

How does writing on your own differ from writing with Dave? Do you prefer one to the other?
Dave and I email our co-authored works back and forth to each other. One of us will work on it for however long they feel inspired, then pass it back to the other. While Dave is in possession of our co-written work-in-progress, I work on whatever solo piece I have going. I love the fact that I get to switch back and forth between co-writing and solo writing. It helps to keep things fresh and is a great antidote to writer’s block. [Oh! That sounds like a great way to avoid writer's block. Also sounds like it gives you some space to let things rest and look at your work with fresh eyes.]

You and Dave write adult paranormal. What made you decide to go with YA for your solo book?
Actually, Dream Shade (YA paranormal) is the first thing I ever wrote to completion. After I finished the first draft, I told Dave about it. I actually thought he might tease me about my newfound “hobby.” Instead, he was extremely encouraging, and even expressed the thought that writing might be a good creative outlet for himself. A year or two later, we started writing our first co-authored piece. That one turned out to be my first published work. After the success of publishing a co-written book, I found the courage to submit my solo effort. {Wow! That is awesome. And yay Dave! Way to support your sister!!]

What's your favorite thing about writing on your own?
I can write whenever inspiration strikes, without waiting for it to be my “turn.”

What do you miss about your team writing?
It is SO MUCH FUN to bounce ideas off a co-author! Dave and I have the best conversations when we call each other to discuss a work in progress.

Do you have more solo books planned and if so, what genre(s)?
I’ve already written two other solo novels — one SciFi and one Chick Lit — and a slew of short stories of various genres. Will they ever see the light of day? After many revisions, maybe!

What do you have out now, or coming out? Any upcoming events? A website we can find you and your books at? An author photo? A booktrailer? Anything else you want to share?

Dream Shade was just released on 10/25/13. It’s available through MuseItUp Publishing.

As if high school wasn't tough enough, sophomore Sarah Pasmore has one extra little problem: ghosts have started appearing to Sarah and they seem to want something from her. With help from her brainy best friend, as well as a few new friends (including the hottest guy in school), Sarah must solve the mystery of what the spirits want in order to put them back to rest. To complicate matters further, a more evil spirit will go to great lengths to make sure this doesn’t happen. As they investigate the past to unravel this supernatural mystery, the teens learn a lesson in the powers of friendship and love.

MASKED LOVE by Nicole Zoltack

Today I am thrilled to be a part of Nicole Zoltack's release day celebration for

MASKED LOVE!!!!

Isn't that cover just wonderful??

You can read my review of this Regency Holiday Romance, published by Swoon Romance, HERE

Now, Nicole isn't just a super talented author, she's also a good friend of mine. And, like any good friend, she convinced one of her characters to interview with me.
So, without further ado, I present to you Isabelle!

MW: Welcome, Isabelle and thank you so much for coming over to chat with me. I really enjoyed reading your story, and I know there are many others out there who will love your tale as much as I did. Being Lady Theodosia's maid, you must have been quite worried about being found out at the masquerade ball. What made you agree to her plan?

Isabelle: Oh, I was so worried! I didn't want to disgrace Lady Theodosia or her family. I desperately didn't want to get caught. It was such a silly thing to do, but Lady Theodosia was so worried about meeting her betrothed for the first time the next day that she wanted to make certain she knew one friendly face behind the masks. Lady Theodosia has always been so good and kind to me. I didn't even think about refusing her.

MW: I can understand that. Think back to the first time you met your masked suitor. What word first comes to mind when you think of him in that moment?

Isabelle: I had been so flustered! I was quite beside myself. The first word... Well, it would have to be shocking. Shocking that he would pick me out of the crowded room full of beautiful ladies to talk to and dance with. And shockingly handsome, of course!

MW: Ah, yes. Lord Adrian is quite handsome. Did you ever wonder if perhaps the man behind the mask was a groom, masquerading on behalf of his master, as you did?

Isabelle: Why no! What Lady Theodosia asked of me just isn't done. To think that another man might have been there on behalf of his master never crossed my mind.

MW: I guess I'm just a bit more suspicious than you. Could have to do with the gentleman I have masquerading as a prince in a story, but that's for another time. What is your most favorite thing about Adrian?

Isabelle: That he sees me. He actually sees me. Most men, even male servants, don't see me. I'm just a lowly handmaiden to them and unworthy of their time. But Adrian doesn't allow our different classes to shield his eyes. I never dreamt that anything like this could ever happen to me.

MW: That is so lovely. I can see why you fell for him! What is your most favorite Christmas memory?

Isabelle: Oh, I have too many to share! Christmas with my mother was wonderful. She used to get me small trinkets or presents to show how much she cared for me. Present giving isn't usually done at Christmas time, but it's something we shared.

MW: What a lovely memory. OK. Now time for a few random Christmas questions. What's your favorite Christmas Carol?

Isabelle: Now that is another impossible question to answer! I love all of them and know all the words by heart. I do tend to sing "While Shepherds Watched their Flocks by Night" and "Here We Come a-Wassailing" a fair amount.

MW: Great choices. Mine's "O Come, O Come Emanuel". There's just something about the minor key that calls to me. What's your favorite Christmas food?

Isabelle: Marchpane, a delicious cake I only ever eat after the Christmas meal. Just the smell of it baking makes my mouth water and gives me hope and much happiness.

MW: I have often read of marchpane, but never eaten it. I think I will need to rectify that this year! What's your favorite Christmas tradition?

Isabelle: I enjoy everything about Christmas, especially the church service, but also the lighting of the Yule Log. It warms the entire house and makes me feel so much lighter and happier, despite my mother's passing.

Those truly are great traditions. Thank you so much for visiting, Isabelle.

Now, I'm sure after all that, you want to know more about Isabelle's story. So, here it is! (Go ahead, swoon some more over the cover!)

Isabelle is content being a maid, and will do anything for her lady, even accompany her to a masquerade ball. Lady Theodosia needs extra support and encouragement on this night, for tomorrow she will meet the man her parents have pledged her to.
Isabelle has never had occasion to attend such an event, and is at first ill at ease. But meeting an enchanting young man during the course of the evening makes her wish for a life she can never have. Thinking she will never see him again, she returns his flirtation and even reveals her face. Imagine her shock when he shows up the next morning, announcing his claim on Lady Thedosia.
Isabelle does all she can to avoid Lord Adrian Wingave, but then he not only sees her, he recognizes her. To make matters worse, Isabelle fears her feelings are not one-sided. Torn between duty and desire, Isabelle hopes for something more this Christmas.
